Cancer treatment is complex and requires a team of cancer specialist. It is important to keep in mind that cancer is not a single disease and there are about 200 different types of cancer, to add to the complexity each is staged differently and subsequent treatment plan is decided depends on the type, stage and general condition of the patient. It is important to know that there are 3 ways in which cancer can be cured:- 1) Surgery 2) Radiation 3) Chemotherapy or targeted therapy or immunotherapy . Three cancer specialist doctors involved are ie surgical oncologist, Radiation oncologist and medical oncologist respectively. To treat majority solid cancers (eg head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal cancer) a combination of these three approaches are part of cure for cancer. While in hematological cancers (blood cancer CLL, CML, AML, ALL) targeted or chemotherapy is usually used. A good treatment plan is important in cure for cancer. Duration of treatment is decided based on the plan chosen.
